In the 18th century the British Navy stored gin alongside gunpowder on their ships. In order to ensure that the gunpowder would still ignite in the unfortunate situation that the gin spilled or leaked into the gunpowder, the gin had to be ignitable itself. Storing gin at over 57% alcohol by volume ensured that the alcohol would light and thus was 114 proof and above was deemed “Navy Strength."
